This Vacation Morning, Industrial Hit & Run, Kept Flooding Me With Memories!

We were out of town to catch up with some of our new exploring friends and “Rita” happened to find some industry near our hotel. Being the early risers we are, we got up and after it. A few cups of coffee later and we were parking our vehicle and looking for an entry point. What follows is us documenting this place that held so many unexpected memories for me, and hints of a vanished industrial business all around!

Each site we explore is so unique. You never know if or how a site will affect you. We started with old industrial buildings, so they will always hold a special place in my heart, but it seems to have been deeper than that for me. I hadn’t really put my finger on it until this explore. It wasn’t till the scents of “this” place flooded me with all those memories from childhood.

This place reminded me of my father and most of the places he ever worked. The sights, smells, and imagined sounds of this shop floor were a microcosm of my childhood memories. Each room we walked through, had me reminded of him at different times and places. The more I was reminded of him, the more I missed him. He has been gone 56 months today, and the way Covid messed with time, it seems like just yesterday. I wish he was here to see and hear about all our crazy adventures. Hug and appreciate your loved ones, even if there is a bit of a rift. It is all small in the grand scheme of things! There is no time like the present to make amends.

While this place was largely free from graffiti, the graffiti that was there was colorful and fun! Even the paintings of Pinky & The Brain reminded me of times spent with my father. I honestly couldn’t go further than 15′ without thinking of him! This explore wasn’t super detailed or in-depth, it was a great way to start a vacation weekend of exploring! The adventures we got into on this weekend alone can carry this site for a bit of time! Stay Tuned

  1. This text really struck a chord with me. It’s amazing how places can evoke such vivid memories and emotions, especially those tied to loved ones. The way you described the scents and sounds of the industrial site transporting you back to your childhood is so powerful. It’s a beautiful reminder of how deeply our experiences are intertwined with the people we care about. I can’t help but wonder, do you often find yourself revisiting places that remind you of your father, or was this a particularly unique experience? Also, how do you think exploring these abandoned sites helps you process those memories? I’d love to hear more about how these adventures shape your perspective on life and loss. Keep sharing these stories—they’re truly inspiring.

    • Thank you a ton for the kind words! We do tend to revisit these sites if and when they are open and available to us, not just because of the flood of memories. Yet, every single time we get into these places, even if it is a revisit, the memories keep coming back. While we don’t chase out these feelings, we welcome them every time they show up. Most times when something triggers a memory, it isn’t until later that I fully realize what that memory and those feelings were all about! Occasionally I’m flooded with feelings more than memories, and that can be a strange thing to work through while out adventuring. More so, if those feelings are of lost friends and loved ones! These buildings remind me that all things come and go, and nothing lasts forever. Loss and the progression of life are just normal things we all must deal with in whatever ways we can! Ty again for playing along, It means a ton to us!

  2. Exploring abandoned places always brings a mix of excitement and nostalgia, doesn’t it? Your story about the industrial site and the memories of your father really struck a chord. It’s amazing how a place can evoke such vivid emotions and transport you back in time. I can almost smell the scents and hear the sounds you described. It’s beautiful how you connected the graffiti, like Pinky & The Brain, to moments with your dad—those little details make the experience so personal. I wonder, though, do you think you’ll revisit this place again, or was it a one-time emotional journey? Also, how do you usually prepare yourself mentally for explores that might bring up such strong memories? Your story made me reflect on my own experiences with loss and how places can hold so much meaning. Thanks for sharing something so heartfelt—it’s a reminder to cherish the people and moments that shape us.
